Q & A
"How much coverage do I need?" - A good rule of thumb is between 10 to 20 times your annual income, but everyone has different needs. If your beneficiary receives and invests $167,000 proceeds at 4%, it will produce about a $1,000 monthly income for 20 years. So, from that example, if you want to provide your pre-death income to your family for 20 years, and you earn $48,000 a year, you would need 4 x $167,000 = $668,000 invested at 4%. The lower the interest rate you assume, the more coverage you need, so you may need some help with this.
For help in determining the amount right for you, click on the following link (how much coverage do I need?), and then click on "life insurance need" for an EZ calculator that will help. I will always be glad to help you too, just let me know.
(Note: if you have a pop-up blocker on your computer, you may need to hold down your "Ctrl" key while clicking the link to open the quoter.)
"What risk class am I?" - You may need my help in determining what "health/risk class" you would qualify for (preferred, standard, etc), but with the premium quote calculator above, you can view all classes available. If you use tobacco of any kind, click on "all tobacco classes", and if not, select "all non-tobacco classes". If you formerly used tobacco but have quit, you will probably need my help in determing the right class (you don't qualify for discounts until you have stopped for at least 1 year, best rates generally available after 5 years). "Standard" class is generally for people who are in pretty good health, but may be a little overweight or something similar. "Preferred Plus" class is generally for people who are in excellent health, good medical history, good family history, good driving history, not taking current medications, etc. There are other classes in between those 2 generally available. We won't know for sure what class you would qualify for until the company reviews your history, but I can give you a pretty good idea if you contact me to review your information.
"Which Term plan is right for me?" - How long do you want your premiums to remain level ... 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, a lifetime? And, how long do you plan on keeping the coverage inforce? Generally, you want your premiums to be guaranteed for the entire period that you feel you will need the coverage. After the initial guarantee period on Term Life plans, the rate begins to increase every year (except decreasing benefit plans), and will eventually become hard to afford. If you want coverage and premiums to be level* "forever", click "all products", and those will be the last products shown when you display the quotes.
It is possible, of course, that Term Life is not the type that you need. I always review the pros and cons of different plans before recommending one to clients. Contact me to review other options, no obligation of course.
Desire prices from more than 1 company?
If you want prices from more than one company, click HERE, complete the online form, and then hit submit. Your info will be instantly emailed to me, and I can run quotes for you through all of my companies to see who has the best deal.
You may also use the internet to search term life insurance prices through any quote engine you choose (such as http://www.termforsale.com/). But I would suggest calling me after you have a general idea of costs and I can help you find the plan for you. Generally, life insurance costs the same whether you buy it on the internet or have a local agent serve you. An experienced, local agent can help you estimate the right risk class, amount, and type of coverage that you need. The agent can also help you with questions that internet sites don't generally even bring up, such as:
- Who should own your policy?
- How should beneficiaries be listed?
- Will the coverage affect my potential estate tax liability?
After getting an idea of prices and so forth, call me and I will help you determine how much and what kind of coverage you need. You may find helpful information in a newsletter that I wrote regarding " what kind of policy is best?". If you would like to read it now,
.
If you want help to review all the options, call or email me. I will be happy to run the quotes for you, if you prefer. With over 30 years of experience, perhaps I can help. No cost or obligation to buy.
Email me at Wayne@MyAgentNow.com, or call my office at (901) 758-8886, or on my cell at (901) 488-1399. No obligation, of course.
Thank you!
Wayne McCullough, LUTCF
